There is something so elegant about gloves.
No, I don't mean the woolly, wintery, Christmas kind! (Although there's a very special place in my heart for those too!) I mean proper ladies dress gloves.
Think Audrey in
Breakfast at Tiffany's or
Sabrina... Fabulous.
It's actually my birthday today and I'm in Lisbon with my family (I'm half Portuguese) and my father took me to one of Lisbon's most treasured little boutiques - The Glove Shop.
This shop is delightful. It has been around since 1925 and is just a tiny little doorway in the middle of one of Lisbon's most crowded streets.
The owner, fully kitted out in a suit, just takes one swift glance at your hands and knows exactly what size you are. The selection of gloves this shop carries is stunning. Gloves in gorgeous buttery leather in every colour combination you can think of.
To try the gloves on, you place your elbow on a little cushion while he works the gloves onto your hands. They are soooooo soft and feel so luxurious! I ended up coming out with two pairs! A butterscotchy-caramel coloured suede pair with navy blue leather accents and a classic white leather pair with little buttons on the cuffs.
Here are the caramel coloured gloves. I think the contrast of the suede with
the smooth blue leather is lovely, and so unusual!
And the beautiful white ones:
The leather immediately starts shaping itself to the shape of your hands when wearing them. I think the suede pair will be quite versatile. But I'll have to be careful with the white - not only to keep them clean but I'll also have to wear them with something quite feminine and girly, in order to avoid looking like a magician!
I think I'll aim for this type of thing:
Time to dig out the high waisted pencil skirts methinks!
